Industrial Risks, Fire and Containment Assessment and Study Department (Seric)

The Industrial Risks, Fire and Containment Assessment and Study Department (Seric) has the task of carrying out specialist appraisals and studies regarding the management of risks posed by:

  • fire
  • explosions
  • the dispersion of radioactivity in facilities and modes of transport

It also carries out risk assessments for non-nuclear facilities.

The department must therefore develop tools, and gather and summarise knowledge and methods required for assessments in these areas.

Technical support

To fulfill its duties, Seric initiates, carries out or monitors either with other IRSN units, and particularly the Major Accident Prevention Division, or with external bodies, specific studies which respond to the requirements of the assessment. The department participates in defining the corresponding line of research carried out in other IRSN departments.

Large projects

Seric also participates in activities which are part of international programmes and specific partnership agreements with foreign countries.

Finally, Seric participates, within its areas of expertise, in the drafting of standards, manuals, regulations and doctrine for French and international authorities and provides training within and outside of the Institute.
