Successive studies conducted on the management of nuclear post-accidentai circumstances have shawn that it must be based on an anticipated characterisation of the radiological vulnerability of the environment, using an overall approach and according ta a strategy that takes inhabitants and their living conditions into accourir.
The PRIME project has investigated and implemented a pilot method for charactertsmg contaminated areas and usable by risk managers dealing with industrial accidents - notably involving radioactive substances - in relationship with a panel of stakeholders: experts, decision-rnakers and local elected officiais, citizens. The method is based on Multi Criteria Analysis (MCA). It aims at modelling the different and sometimes contradicting opinions and at ranking the radio-ecological and socio-economical sensitivity factors of a region towards radioactive pollution, in the order of assisting decision making, These factors are defined by the environmental and anthropie parameters that may aggravate or limit the consequences of radioactive pollution. As the PRIME project was a partnership between scientific laboratories, representatives of public mstitutions and of civil society, it led to explore innovative forms of cooperation and to develop a tool combining MCAand GIS mapping.
