Summary

This paper presents the main features and latest improvements of the SCANAIR code devoted to the study of the thermo-mechanical behavior of a PWR rod under Reactivity Initiated Accident (RIA), for high burnup UO2 and MOX fuels. In this paper, we will focus on the main new modeling and its impact on the results, concerning: • the cladding mechanics: status of the PROMETRA programme, and description of the first set of available mechanical properties resulting from this programme, • the new thermal-hydraulics management, with a complete modeling of the water boiling curve, and its application in PWR or low pressure conditions, • the capability to calculate a "capsule" geometry, as opposed to a ìrodî geometry (to be used for the interpretation of the RIA-SILENE tests), • the new intragranular swelling modeling formalism, that leads to more realistic loading speeds on the cladding during PCMI, • and the introduction of the MOX fuel thermal properties. The numerical verification of the stand-alone modules, and the physical qualification on the global experiments, such as CABRI REP-Na tests, show very satisfying results. Further development are foreseen in the frame of the planned CABRI Water Loop programme.
