Radiative transfer during an accidental sequence in a Pressurized Water Reactor

Summary

In this work a radiative transfer model is proposed for severe accident calculations in Pressurized Water Reactors. The core is modeled as a porous medium with a large optical thickness, composed of a fluid phase and a solid phase. The radiation transport is approximated supposing that it can be calculated as a function of the temperature gradiant in the solid phase. An equivalent conductivity is then defined in the medium comprising a purely thermal component and a radiative component. This conductivity paricularly depends on the geometrical features of the medium. The model presented here was established to continuously account for the significant variations of the geometry that occur in the core undergoing a degradation process. This model is rather easy to implement in an isotropic multi-dimensional system where the geometry evolves continuously.
