Observations of gas temperature stratification phenomenon during experimental pool fire in a confined and forced ventilated enclosure

This contribution presents an analysis on vertical temperature stratification during large-scale tests pool fire in a confined and ventilated enclosure in the framework of research program elaborated by IRSN and the French company COGEMA. This work proposes a detailed analysis of the temperature stratification in such fire scenario. From large-scale tests involving 0.3 MW to 3 MW pool fire, a description of temperature profile has been performed. It shows that more than two layers can be observed, characterised either by homogenous temperature or by temperature gradient. From experimental data, a general description is proposed and enables to define the evolution of temperature profile with time for all tests. The analysis emphasizes the differences between the idealistic concept of two homogeneous zones and the real gas temperature profile. Conclusions bring practical analysis that can be used by the experts to temper the prediction proposed by the two zones codes and by the researchers to elaborate improvements to this type of codes for the simulation of transient under-ventilated fire in enclosure.
