Summary

This work deals with a phenomenological study of large scale pool fires from experiments performed in a large scale calorimeter in the framework of a research programme developed by the French institute "Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire". The experiments consist in a set of 12 liquid pool fire tests. Parameters investigated are the pool area (from 0.1 to 1m2), the fuel type (Dodecane and Hydrogenated Tetra-Propylene) and the height of fuel within the pool before ignition. The analysis focuses on the evolution with time of the mass loss rate and the heat release rate. Different regimes are observed and described. Then global average values of the mass loss rate and the heat release rate are analysed. The coefficients of the Babrauskas correlation expressing the specific mass loss rate versus the pool dimension are proposed. This contribution provides a new set of large scale pool fire data that improves the scientific knowledge on pool fire phenomenological behaviour and on experimental approaches to deal with such fire.
