Summary

External dose assessment for neutrons is still a difficult problem in several fields: nuclear industry, medical applications, industrial and research accelerators, aircrafts and space stations. Two examples of field characterizations using spectrometry are presented, which demonstrate that a better knowledge of neutron energy distributions and of neutron to photon ratio is fundamental for reliable dose evaluation. Actions to improve radiation protection may be proposed such as: better choice of dosemeters adapted and calibrated according to energy of the neutron field encountered, improved shielding and optimization of radiation protection practices and procedures.
