The European Pressurizer Reactor is a result of about 10 years of collaboration between Framatome and Siemens. The two companies have developed a reactor which took the best features of the french N4 and the german KONVOI plants. An evolutionary approach is adopted to benefit from the vast design and operating experience already accumulated. The net result of this design approach is a plant that is economically competitive while achieving a high level of safety. For the design process a lot of R&D work has been performed both in France and in Germany. The main focus was directed towards safety and economics. The present paper gives an overview of all the R&D devoted to severe accidents, in particular those dedicated to the melt stabilization concept in the containment. Obviously, all other R&D works being performed for the current reactors have also been used by the EPR developers, and will contribute to the support to the future EPR operation and evolution.
