Analysis of aerosol collection by droplets : Application to fission products removal in case of severe accident

Summary

During the course of a hypothetical severe accident in a nuclear Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR), containment reactor is pressurized with steam. On addition to that, hydrogen might be produced by the reactor core oxidation and distributed into the containment according to convective flows and steam wall condensation. At the same time, radioactive metallic aerosols are produced by the core fusion. Water spraying is used as a mitigation mean in nuclear PWR containment in order to reduce pressure. At the same time, the aerosols produced by the core fusion are collected by the spraying droplets. The TOSQAN experimental program has been created to simulate typical accidental thermal hydraulic flow conditions in the reactor containment. The test scenario consists of water spray injection in the TOSQAN facility, which is first pressurized with steam and aerosols simulating the fission products (steam and aerosol injections are stopped before the spray release).
