Etude du taux de neutralisation du 218Po

Summary

  The objective of this work is to study the electrical properties of the first radon decay product (218Po). The 218Po penetration in a so-called ‘Zeleny tube’ is considered i. e. in a cylindrical tube under laminar flow conditions with a central electrode used to produce an electric field. The penetration of the charged and neutral 218Po is obtained. The transport equations by convection-diffusion under laminar flow field are applied to the neutral and charged aerosols. They take into account source and sink terms describing the radioactive decay and the neutralisation process. They are solved by a CFD software for which extensive validation is performed. The parameters used in the equations are taken from the literature or directly measured for this study. The neutralisation rate is then determined by fitting its value in such a way that the measured and calculated 218Po charged fraction are identical. It is shown that this rate depends on radon activity, as shown by previous studies for lower radon concentrations, but also on the mean residence time in the tube.
