Summary

During the course of a hypothetical severe accident in a nuclear Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR), containment reactor is pressurized by steam and hydrogen might be produced by the reactor core oxidation and distributed into the containment according to convective flows and steam wall condensation. In order to assess the risk of detonation generated by a high local hydrogen concentration, hydrogen distribution in the containment has to be known. Water spraying is used as a mitigation means in nuclear PWR containment in order to reduce pressure and to produce gases mixing. This paper presents an experimental work devoted to study the heat, mass and momentum transfers between water droplets and gases mixtures for typical accidental thermal hydraulic conditions in PWR containment. Spray tests are performed in the field of the TOSQAN experimental programme undertaken by the Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire (IRSN) in order to conduct thermal hydraulic containment studies. The TOSQAN tests matrix is composed of 12 tests which allow analyzing analytically the influence of parameters linked to the gas mixture such as, initial temperature, saturation and composition, and to the water spray such as, mass flow rate, temperature, droplets size.
