Summary

Very few studies were devoted to evaluate the sampling performances of personal inhalable aerosol samplers to calm air (low air movement) environments. At the same time, the majority of indoor occupational exposures occur when the ambient wind has no pronounced effect on the aerosol sampling. The exposure monitoring for workers facing the aerosol source in a close proximity has also not been adequately studied. The above puts forward a clear need to evaluate performance characteristics of newly-designed and existing personal inhalable aerosol samplers operating near the source in very slowly moving air. In this study, a new experimental protocol and a test facility were designed and developed for measuring the sampling efficiency of personal inhalable samplers in very slow moving air when the samplers face the aerosol source. The new protocol was utilized for determining the sampling efficiencies of three personal inhalable samplers commonly used by industrial hygienists worldwide: the IOM Inhalable Sampler (sampling flow rate = 2 L/min), the Button Personal Inhalable Aerosol Sampler (4 L/min), and the 25-mm Millipore filter holder (1 L/min). Prior to this study, among the three above-listed dust samplers only the IOM Sampler has been characterized for low air movement (Kenny et al., 1999).
