Security: IRSN provides training on security of radioactive sources in Africa

As part of the assistance it provides to its Member States, the IAEA turns to IRSN for a range of training programs in French on security in Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Niger and Chad.

The risk that groups or individuals with malicious intent might use radioactive sources that have been stolen, diverted or dispersed during transportation led the IAEA to hold a number of training programs in 2013 focused on the security of radioactive sources in Sub-Saharan, French-speaking Africa. Drawing on its know-how in this subject, IRSN is involved in this preventive educational initiative.

As part of the assistance it provides to its Member States, the IAEA turns to IRSN for a range of training programs in French on security in Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Niger and Chad. These courses, given by IRSN experts, aim to increase awareness of this real radiological threat and to help set up a state organization to prevent and reduce the consequences of a potential malicious act. The five-day workshops include simulation exercises with trainees representing the police, gendarmerie, customs office, civil defense services and the competent national authority. Around a hundred people have been trained thus far, and more sessions are planned in the region in 2014.
