IRSN signed an agreement to contribute its skills in nuclear emergency management to France Expertise Internationale (FEI), an organization that promotes French technical assistance and expertise abroad.
A public undertaking overseen by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development, FEI helps implement programs for international cooperation and development assistance funded by the European Instrument for Stability and Peace and coordinated by the European Commission (EC), which includes chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) centers of excellence.
Launched in 2010, the initial goal of this European instrument was to develop a joint approach to nonproliferation and the fight against CBRN terrorism via a worldwide network. At the request of Member States, this was later enlarged to include major risks of natural or industrial origin. To be able to respond successfully to tenders by the EC Directorate General for Development and Cooperation (EuropeAid) in the area of emergency management, FEI constituted an international consortium of twelve members, including IRSN.
