Radioprotection of the Environment: state of the art and IRSN’s recommendations

To support the discussion because France has obligation to transpose into its national legislation the new EURATOM basic Safety Standards Directive, IRSN has produced a state of the art and a review of current international practices. It ends with IRSN’s recommendations.

Radioprotection of the environment is an emerging field that has considerably evolved over the last decade. Within this context and because France has obligation to transpose into its national legislation no later than 2018 the new EURATOM basic Safety Standards Directive, discussions are underway at national level around existing knowledge and methodologies which are or could be used both by operators and by the authorities for assessing radiological risk to ecosystems exposed to ionising radiation.

To support this discussion, the French Institute for Radiation protection and Nuclear Safety has produced the present report “Radioprotection of the Environment : state of the art and IRSN’s recommendations”. This document comprises a state of the art and a review of current international practices in this field. It ends with IRSN’s recommendations, referring to exposure situations as defined in the revised EU BSS accordingly to the ICRP publication 103 (2007) – planned, existing and emergency.
