The knowledge of shale poromechanical behavior proves to be essential for various environmental issues such as CO2 deep geological storage, high level radioactive waste storage, oil field abandonment... This paper underlines the key points of shale experimental characterization within the framework of Biot's mechanics of fluid saturated porous solids. A whole methodology to conduct ½dometric tests on such sensitive and weakly permeable material is described. Instructions to obtain direct measurements of the drained bulk modulus, the shear modulus and Biot's coefficient, and subsequently deduce values of Biot's modulus and the intrinsic permeability are given.
