Monitoring contamination levels based on the use of mussel caging

A bioindicalor raoniloring network (RINBIO) was deployed ail along the French Mediterraneau coast (1,800 km), using caged nuissels ( Mytihis gatloprovinciatis) to assess contamination by heavy metals, POPs and radionuclides. The caging technique compensated fot the scarcity of natural shellfisb stocks along the coast and cnablc corapaiison between sites regardless of their physicochemical and trophic characteristics, Models linking a biométrie parameter from 103 raussel samples to pollutant levels make it possible lo adjust raw data on contamination, by makisig a clear distinction between physiological l'actors (growih) and environmental ones.
