Within the evolution of the French PWR fuel management, IRSN has initiated R&D studies related to fuel behaviour under LOCA and RIA conditions, in partnership with EDF. Based on an extensive state of the art review on LOCA that led to identifying the pending questions, the DRACCAR code (3D-muti-rod tool) is now under development and reflection on the way to study the effect of irradiation in bundle geometry is underway. Concerning RIA, the first two CIP0 tests of the CABRI International Program (CIP) performed in the sodium loop with UO2 rods at 75 GWd/t and advanced cladding (Zirlo®, M5TM) did not lead to failure when subjected to an energy injection of about 90 to 100 cal/g under a power pulse of 30 ms half width. Additional studies are now mainly focused on the preparation of the future CIP tests in the CABRI water loop, on fission gas dynamic behaviour for performance in the NSRR reactor within a JAEA/IRSN cooperation and on the SCANAIR development and qualification.
