The ability to estimate the risk linked to a fire in an enclosure equipped with mechanical ventilation is a long-standing concern for the industry, in particular for the nuclear industry where the confinement of radioactive materials is of prime importance. Current understanding of fire dynamics in enclosures is mostly based on reduced-scale experiments and the IRSN’s DIVA facility was designed to provide large-scale experimental data for computer-code validation. The objective of this paper is to illustrate the difficulties encountered in such validation works. Two themes are emphasized: the difficulty to extend some models poorly featured to a confined environment and the non-predictive capabilities of most codes due to the use of the fuel mass flow-rate as an input.
