Inhalation of airborne uranium compounds is a major health risk for nuclear workers. For dose assessment purposes, the International Commission on Radiological Protection dosimetric model is applied to calculate dose coefficients, retention and excretion functions. The model for chronic contamination is the sum of successive independent acute intakes. The aim of this work is to test such hypothesis using as an experimental model a rat contaminated by repeated inhalations.

We have determined the biokinetics of single and repeated acute inhalations of uranium dioxide in rats. The follow-up of activity after acute intake was used to design a rat inhalation biokinetic model. The theoretical organ retentions and excretions after repeated UO2 inhalations have been computed with this model and compared to the experimental measurements.

We showed that the experimental biokinetics after the repeated UO2 inhalations are well represented by a sum of successive independent acute intakes. Under these experimental conditions, each acute intake seemed to have no effect on the biokinetics of the latter incorporations.
