The Safety assessment section for mine sites, contaminted soils and radioactive waste disposal facilities (B4S, ex-BERIS) is located in Fontenay aux Roses (France). It is managed by Michaël Tichauer.
Summary
Context and research themes
B4S is responsible for the safety assessment of above-ground radioactive waste disposal facilities and underground or deep geological disposal projects (particularly, the Aube repository, the Channel Disposal Centre and long-lived low-level waste disposal, and intermediate-level or high-level long-lived waste projects).
This unit also assesses the containment capacities of the various radioactive waste disposal site barriers (geological barrier and constructed components) and, therefore, initiates, carries out or monitors either with other IRSN units or with external bodies, studies in the various disciplines concerned. It develops and maintains the MELODIE program concerning the transfer of radionuclides in radioactive waste disposal facilities.
