This department is mainly responsible for computer code development and research on criticality risk control (risk of triggering an uncontrolled chain reaction) for fuel cycle facilities and transport.
The Sec is constituted of an expertise section, the Assessment Section for Criticality Risks and Accidents (Berac) and of a research laboratory, the Study, Research, Codes Development and Validation Laboratory (Lerd).

Sec also provides technical support for criticality risk prevention, at the request of other IRSN units in charge of safety assessment files (laboratories,plants and transport assessment).
Sec develops computer codes within the scope of the Cristal program (latest generation criticality formulary incorporating all potential user requirements) to evaluate factors possibly leading to criticality conditions in corresponding sectors.
