Internal monitoring techniques have been characterised by considerable technical and scientific advances, both in the field of in-vivo and bio-assay monitoring. Availability of modelling techniques and computer simulation tools have allowed the formulation of more complex models and the employment of more elaborate calibration techniques using phantoms. An overview shall be presented along with speculations about future trends.
The application of techniques in routine monitoring is less far developed and has become the subject of a number of European Community projects. Improvement of routine monitoring techniques necessitates a definition of improvement or added benefit with relevant parameters characteristic of the method chosen. An assessment of possibilities – specifically studied in the IDEA project – shall be presented, outlining actual and possible developments in internal monitoring techniques, intended for implementation in routine monitoring or specialised applications. Special attention will be given to the application of phantoms in the validation of methods and for routine calibration.
