The 36th annual meeting of the European Safeguards Research and Development Association (ESARDA) in Luxembourg provided an opportunity to review the association's goals and to confirm IRSN’s active involvement in its activities.
ESARDA is the European association created to harmonize and advance research and development in the field of international nuclear material safeguards, which are mainly implemented by EURATOM and the IAEA to ensure the peaceful use of such materials. ESARDA's members come from a variety of backgrounds, including representatives of national regulatory authorities and TSOs, science and technology institutes, industry, representatives of EURATOM, and international observers.
ESARDA is organized into working groups that focus on different subjects. Some are technical, such as measurement methods or nuclear materials containment and surveillance systems, while others are geared to regulatory affairs, such as the study led by the Implementation of Safeguards Group to define and develop EURATOM and IAEA control objectives and related methods. A representative of IRSN will take over the chairmanship of this working group for the 2015/2016 period. IRSN, a long-standing member of ESARDA, is also involved through its experts in several of the association's other groups.
