On the day of the Franco-British Summit held on January 18, 2018, between President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Theresa May, the French and British ministers in charge of energy met to discuss nuclear energy cooperation.
The conclusions of their discussions, annexed to the Summit Communiqué, emphasize that the bilateral cooperation in the nuclear fields, supported by both regulators (ASN, the French Nuclear Safety Authority, and ONR, the UK Office for Nuclear Regulation) and their respective Technical Support Organisations (IRSN and WOOD), should rely upon the most stringent requirements in terms of safety, security and radiation protection.
It was highlighted that the bilateral cooperation between France and the UK will remain a driving force in the development of international standards or reference levels within the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) or the Western European Nuclear Regulators Association (WENRA), as well as for developing harmonized expertise practices (in particular through ETSON, the European Technical Safety Organisation Network) and for addressing long term research challenges in nuclear safety.
Building on this high profile political statement, putting safety at the core of nuclear energy cooperation, IRSN, as an active member of the ETSON network, intends to actively promote the role of scientifically based technical expertise for enhancing nuclear safety worldwide.
