A surface decontamination process is here considered: laser ablation. This technology is promising for paint stripping. During the process,particulate matter and gases resulting from interaction between the laser beam and the target are released. These aerosols can influence the process efficiency (Géléoc et al., 2004) and present a risk for the health of operators (Lee & Cheng, 2004). The aim of the study is to perform both a physical and a chemical characterization of laser produced aerosols during ablation of paints and as well as to understand their mechanisms of formation.
