Influence of the filtration velocity on the clogging of a flat filtering medium by solid particles.

The purpose of this paper is to present results concerning the influence of the filtration velocity on the clogging of a flat filtering medium with a cellulose fibre base, used in automotive air filters, and to compare these results with those of a filtering medium with a mixture of cellulose and glass fibres; both media are of low efficiency. The main result obtained is that, for a given mass of deposited aerosols, the DP/DPo ratio increases when the filtration velocity decreases (DP and DPo are, respectively, the pressure drop of the clogged filter and its initial pressure drop) in the case of the medium with a cellulose fibre base. On the other hand, this ratio is independent of the filtration velocity for the medium comprising glass fibres. On the basis of the experimental data obtained, a correlation allowing the calculation of the packing density of the cake formed at the surface of the filter is proposed, according to the air velocity (v) and to the mass median aerodynamic diameter of the aerosols (damm).
