Summary

Irradiation induces a marked acute remodeling of the gut wall and may lead to late fibrosis. Combining morphological, biochemical and molecular approach, we studied the expression of MMP and TIMP in the ileum and colon of rats one to seven days after irradiation and in ileum of patients with radiation enteritis. In both studies expression and activity of MMP and TIMP were increased, their balance being in favor of extra-cellular matrix degradation in the acute phase while in favor of matrix accumulation in radiation enteritis.
