NéoPal : base de données nationale des déformations néotectoniques et des paléoséismes

Congress title :21ème RST (Réunion des Sciences de la Terre)
Congress town :Dijon
Congress date :04/12/2006

Summary

Recent paleoseismology studies show, in France and neighbouring areas, occurrence of large earthquakes which return interval appears much longer than the time span of historical seismicity. Although being seldom, these events could cause severe damages. They thus have to be taken into account for assessing seismic hazard applied for design and reinforcement of “special risks” industrial structures. In late 2001, the French Ministry of Ecology and Sustainable Development opened to the public, through a web site (www.neopal.net) a database of evidences of neotectonic and paleoseismic deformations in France. This database is managed by the French Geological Survey (BRGM). Up to date, close to 150 evidences, in Metropolitan France but also French Indies, are described in details their interpretation by original authors (origin, age, ...) are weighted through an evaluation by the NéoPal steering committee (that also includes public, private and academic institutions: EDF, IRSN, CEA, Paris VI university, EOST and the CEREGE) based on careful and detailed analysis of the bibliographical source. This article presents the NéoPal database and web site, the steering committee, and the coming evolution of the NéoPal base and site.
