ENEA and IRSN sign an agreement on nuclear safety and radiological protection at the Franco-Italian summit

On April 9th, 2010, in Paris, Jacques Repussard, Director General of the Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN) and Giovanni Lelli, Commissioner of the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA) signed a "cooperation agreement" on nuclear safety and radiological protection.

The agreement forms part of the Franco-Italian summit co-chaired by the French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, and the Italian President, Silvio Berlusconi.

This agreement helps to consolidate the cooperation that already began last year between France and Italy in the nuclear sector, particularly in the areas of research, nuclear safety and radiological protection. IRSN and ENEA will strive to develop the provision of information to the public together.

According to Giovanni Lelli: 'ENEA's commitment to the nuclear sector - with a view to supporting the nuclear safety agency - particularly concerns the acquisition of tools to analyse the nuclear processes and systems which play a part in the technology of the French EPR reactor. IRSN boasts unquestionable competence in this sector as it is the nuclear safety expertise organisation that supports the French authorities.'

According to Jacques Repussard: 'The joint aim of IRSN and ENEA is to share their experience in radiological protection, safety and security to favour the safe and responsible use of civil nuclear technology. The engineers and researchers of both bodies will be able to share their experience and develop joint projects in a very wide range of areas, from plant safety analysis methods to research on the safety of fusion installations such as ITER as well as the radiological monitoring of people and the environment.'

This agreement forms part of the Memorandum of Understanding between France and Italy on cooperation in the nuclear energy sector signed in Rome on 24 September 2009. It will contribute to the development of Franco-Italian relations in the field of nuclear safety.
