On Monday 6 December 2010 in New Delhi, during the French President's visit to the Republic of India, Mr. Repussard, Director General of the French Institute for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN), and Mr. Bajaj, Chairman of the Indian Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), signed an IRSN-AERB framework agreement for general cooperation in the field of nuclear safety.
According to Jacques Repussard, “through this agreement, the practice of the bilateral scientific and technical cooperation that has developed in a harmonious and mutually beneficial manner for more than ten years between IRSN and the Indian nuclear research centre BARC in the field of nuclear safety will be extended to the Indian Atomic Energy Regulatory Board."
By signing this agreement, both organizations are illustrating their resolve to enhance cooperation in this massively important field, particularly within the context of the forthcoming construction of two EPR nuclear reactors at the Jaitapur site.
Growth in nuclear activities world-wide has led IRSN to expand its contribution to furthering knowledge and expertise in nuclear safety (independent computation codes, laboratories, databases, training, etc.) and to increase international cooperation among organisations that assess nuclear and radiation risks, a means for standardising good practices.
