The Russian federal budgetary unstitution SEC NRS (Scientific and Engineering Centre for Nuclear and Radiation Safety) and IRSN signed a Framework cooperation agreement in the field of nuclear safety and security in conjunction with the IAEA International TSO conference taking place from 15 to 18 October, 2018, in Brussels.
The agreement is intended to boost the bilateral cooperation between both TSO bodies of the Russian and French nuclear safety authorities. It covers the sharing of their experiences and the elaboration of common positions regarding conduct of scientific and research activities. The agreement gives credit to the high competence level of the two organisations’ staff who reviews safety documentation for all stages of nuclear facility lifetime.
As part of the continuation of their collaboration, which dates back to 1991, the two organizations pursue joint activities of prime significance for the safety of the nuclear power sector in their countries, such as management of radioactive waste, in particular, deep geological disposal ; the issues related to the hydrogen risk; the quantification of uncertainties on multiphysics codes or the safety aspects related to chemical processes in fuel cycle facilities.
Mr Jean-Christophe Niel, general director of IRSN, added: “This agreement put forth the common belief that nuclear safety is based on scientific and technical excellence. IRSN, as an active member of the ETSON network, intends to actively promote the role of scientifically based technical expertise for enhancing nuclear safety worldwide”
