THÉMIS is a transportable and demountable weighing device, for checking the gross weights of containers for nuclear materials on site. The device allows quantities of the material to be estimated in a non-intrusive way, easily and quickly, without using large warehousing equipment (e.g. fork-lift truck). The system has an autonomous electric power supply of one day's capacity. Standard uncertainty is about 1.4 kg (1 sigma), on an interval extending from 10 kg to 3 tons. THÉMIS consists of two mobile tripods, equipped with strain sensors, which are placed on each side of the container to be inspected. The article to be weighed, is either suspended from the tripods using hooks, or is placed on a platform. It is lifted by two hydraulic jacks. A microcomputer, coupled to dedicated electronics, controls the unit, determines the gross weight of the article and records the results. The whole device is contained in five portable cases and can be set up in ½ hour by two people. Implementation of the system is simple; calibration is checked by an approved organization every year.
